Ok guys and gals, here's a chance to have some ham radio fun.
Ward, N0AX, is proposing an interesting twist in this years IARU HF
Championship contest, an "off year" for WRTC,.....and N3FR and I are
suggesting a further twist.
Ward is suggesting a WRTC style contest without all the formal trappings of
the WRTC. You'll find the full text of Wards email in the CQ-CONTEST
archives of www.contesting.com. Scan down the left column for "Contest List
Archives" and select CQ-CONTEST, then "May 2003" by thread and finally look
for Ward's email (dated Wednesday, May 14).
The twist N3FR and I are suggesting is a further "sub" contest of teams
made up of at least one member who participated in the Pa QSO party (as a
single op entrant or as a member of a multi-multi or whatever) in the past.
You would have to follow the outline of Ward's email, registering your team
and following the WRTC rules with modifications as noted by Ward.
The carrot: N3FR and I will sponsor a plaque for the winning team. We
will call this the "The 2003 Pa QSO Party Sub-Dvision of the Off Year
WRTC/IARU HF Championship" or some reasonable facscimilie thereof.
If WRTC and IARU HF Championship mean little or nothing to you, here are
some highlights:
*It's a 24 hour contest, Saturday, July 12, 0000z to Sunday July 13 0000z
(Noon Saturday to noon Sunday, local time)
*SSB and CW
And some of the WRTC rules that really make it competitive:
*100 Watts max out
*A single tribander for 10/15/20 at max height of 25 meters
*A single wire antenna for 160/80/40, no point of which may be more than 25
meters in height.
Now, while you can't have "more" than the above, there's nothing wrong with
having "less". Example: Bob and I will be working from a station whose
tribander will be about 15 meters high. If you don't have access to a
station with a tribander, well you'll be at a disadvantage, but give it a
try if you wish. Same for QRP....100w max is the rule, but here is no
minimum power rule.
While this is a two man team affair, it is not a Multi-single op affair in
the sense that the second operator is running a multiplier
station.....truely only one signal on the air at a time. The "off" operator
may be listening on another radio and may provide information to the "on
air" operator as to available multipliers or other band change suggestions.
(One thing I don't know is if the "off" operator must be listinig on the
"unused" antenna or if a third antenna for listening only is permissible,
but we'll find out).
It would be an "honor system" affair; you would have to submit your score
to Ward as described in his email, within 1 hour of the end of the contest.
The winner of the plaque will be the winning "Pa QSO Party" team based on
what Ward posts on 3830.
So find a "partner" who's station meets the antenna restrictions and make a
team. If we could get 10 or 20 teams of Pa QSO Party stations, that would
be neat. Given the power and antenna restrictions, being competitive should
not be a problem.
So what do you think? Any interest out there? We've got 8 weeks to work out
any details. Let's chew on it here a bit, ok?
