Tim, Good luck from South Jersy, will miss working you this year. I've
operated from Kansas for the past ten years, which is a little further "out
of state".

1. Do you find that calling CQ is effective or do you rely on S and P?

I normally S&P. I've tried calling CQ, when things got slow but have
never had much success. You're closer, so a mix of both should work. You'll
just have to check the high bands, for possible opening but 40m will probably
be your main band. Here in Kansas, 10&15m are too long, 20m is my main band
until 80m opens. 40m opens about the same time a 80m but the 80m CW points
are better. Last year was the only time 40m produced any significant number
of QSOs.

2. Judging from last year's out-of-state standings, it seems like the top
scoring stations run about 1/3 CW and 2/3 SSB. Is this the norm? Or
have there been years when a station using only CW has placed in the
     top 5 out-of-state stations?

This is about normal. I also prefer CW but there is more activity on
SSB. I have to keep moving, a don't waste time on a band/mode that has been
picked clean.

3. Is there much activity on 160 meters, SSB and CW.

I've made a few CW QSOs but the band has never been really open here.
