I had JJ, N3AXB as my "designated driver" and since he lived in PA before
moving to Virginia he knew a lot of the back roads. We did waste an hour
at 35 MPH on a twisty road in CLI.

We had originally planned on hitting 18 counties with maybe a detour into
YOR and ADA near the end. But we got talked into going to SUS to help KA3S
get his "sweep" - and then JJ reprogrammed our route to pick up a bunch of
other counties we hadn't originally planned on hitting.

We figure we didn't get on 80 Meters early enough, we should have worked 80
in POT and TIO.

Only worked Hal, W3USA / M six times and Norm, W3DYA / M once. He was our
last contact at 2159 UTC. After our QSO his last "CQ" he followed with "4
seconds left" - which really made us chuckle.

I got my fill of trying to run mobile SSB in the VA QSO Party in
March. So, I elected not to "fight" the mess on phone. A 50 Watt Mobile
doesn't have much of a chance against the more powerful stations.
So, I'm a devotee of W3DYA running CW only.

I realize it ruins my chances of getting a "sweep" - But the counties we
mobiles generally miss are those "rare" ones that we put on.

I think we heard and called W3FRC from 22 of the 27 counties we were
in. Generally we gave up when they didn't seem to hear any of the stations
calling them and just came back on with another "CQ" We thought maybe they
had their RIT set wrong, or their memory keyer on "automatic pilot" to hold
their frequency. We only got them from 5 counties.

But we sure did enjoy the QSO Party despite the lousy weather. The
windshield wipers sure got a workout. And I am deeply indebted to JJ for
his great job as my chauffeur .

The Good Lord Willing and the Creeks Don't Rise, we will be back next year
and put out those "rare" counties again.

73 to all, Stan - K4UK and JJ - N3AXB

P.S. Do they really want a Log Sheet and a Summary for each County and an
Aggregate Log Sheet and Summary? For the 27 Counties that will run to
about 72 pages - a small book!
