Can hardly call it a score, with only a couple hours of operating time I
could get away from family at niece's wedding in SC. These two hours
were the best of the weekend. Over half my contacts said I was a new
multiplier for them. Glad to help. Thank you for listening for my /M.
I can relate to N3WAV's comments, but not in the PAQP. No place to sleep
is a real bummer I received really good advice before my first /M QP
outing to be sure to have eating and sleeping plans before starting out.
Also, losing a frequency to a highpower station is tough, too. Our
lowpower /M operation probably sounds like a clear spot to most stations,
but I never encountered a PA station that I believe knowingly took my
frequency. I drove my /M in another state's QP to offer some of their
rarer counties. They did not have much activity, only 2 or 3 mobiles and
maybe a dozen fixed stations. As soon as I found a clear spot, one or
the other of two highpower contest stations showed up on the frequency
and took it. Did not matter if I changed frequencies 10-50kHz or even to
another band, they always showed up right there within minutes. I did not
enjoy their party, did not send in my log, and will not be going back.
Understandable why they have low turnout.
I completely agree with all the comments that PAQP is the most fun of all
the parties. The comportment of all the gentlemen and ladies has been
perfect from all that I have seen or heard. Last year, several of the
highpower stations chased QRMing stations from the frequency so my low
power mobile could hand out another PA county. Some stations see the QP
as another contest to hone their stations, antennas and operating skills.
Others are county hunters. And others just like to get on the air and
talk. I enjoy all three, even though I know my score will probably never
be at the top unless 4 or 5 of the real mobilers break an axle (you know
who they are, and they freely pass out their secrets knowing that I still
can't catch them!!). PAQP is great, and all of you represent the true
spirit of ham radio to me.
How many more days? I already have my PA route in the computer.
