YES !! This is a competition. And, there are rules that govern how that
competition is to be run. The contesting reflectors are always full of
people wanting to change the rules to favor themselves. For example, after
the CQWW in a few weeks, the contesting reflectors will again be full of
trash from people wanting to make SO2R (single op 2 radios) a separate
category again. These people complain because they have not developed the
skills needed to do SO2R. I admire people who have developed the ability and
the skill it takes to master SO2R, a skill I still have not.
Instead of changing the rules, the best thing to do is develop new skills
and try new methods, technology, and techniques. Maybe in the PAQP, you can
put up a 20 meter dipole at 15 feet or lower to be a cloud warmer to make it
easier to work close in stations on that band. Or, how about setting up a
VHF band or two. Packet spotting can be used to let people know who is on,
especially the mobiles & rovers as they travel. SO2R is a technique that
can pay big dividends in a contest like the PAQP.
The rules are fine the way they are. Its up to the contestants to make the
best use of their operating time to maximize their scores. This usually
involves having a plan of what band to be on, when to change modes, when to
run, when to S&P. Experience and skill are what is used to maximize a score
and not changing the rules. Look at you station today and decide waht works
well and what needs to be changed. And, start working on it tomorrow.
