This was my first portable operation in the contest and it was a blast. Thanks
to all those who sponsor this great contest and took the time to get on the air.
Having taken the 706 camping a few times over the summer made set-up a lot
easier. Murphy only struck on 160 where the Alpha-Delta DX-CC just didn't want
to play. I did not have time to make a coax to shield shorting plug, so I
managed to eke out a contact with W3FRC but decided to skip that band. Maybe
next year. Potter showed up around 1 or 2 o'clock on Sunday and then everybody
else wanted a quick contact. It was easier to just yield the frequency. About
an hour later I was searching 40 for Cumberland and found him for the sweep.
Now the thoughts turn to next year. While my wife and kids accompanied me to
Clinton, her alma mata -- Lycoming College -- had its annual homecoming this
past weekend. So they went there and visited some friends in Williamsport.
However, next year is her 20th and she definitely wants to go to it. (This
falls under preserving domestic tranquility and such.) We will not know the
date until December 1st. Which means I may just be portable in a Lycoming
county hotel parking lot on Sunday.
Only 11 months, 26 days, 21 hours, 9 minutes and 32 seconds to go!
