Hello, Hal!
Excellent Score!
I don't know how you solo guys do it! I wouldn't be averse to seeing a solo
mobile and mobile with driver split...just gotta get someone to sponsor the
plaque!
I will tell ya what really hurt...starting out SO2R and ending up SO 3/4 R!
Counting down....

Missed LAC and JUN. This was ironic, since I was in Lac myself for a long
time and very close to JUN. But I think this may be my best mobile county
total ever, so I can't complain. I never go into this event expecting a
sweep and I never try very hard to chase counties. Each additional
multiplier adds about 1,850 points to my score, but so would 10 new
contacts. It is usually much easier for a mobile to work 10 new guys than
to find a new multiplier. At least that's my reasoning. Still, it sure
would be nice to have one of those Worked All Counties on my wall!
Activity was really great this year. Some of the best conditions and
activity that I can ever remember. There was very good activity on 20 and
I was really impressed with all of the activity on 15 - more than I've ever
seen. Out of state activity seems to be increasing and this is good I
think. I'm not sure about 10 because I was too busy to go there,
unfortunately. If a mobile is expected to move fast through the counties,
he'll probably stick to 40 and maybe 20. If he takes my approach and
spends more time in each county, he'll hit fewer counties but be able to
spread himself out on more bands and modes. I take this approach because I
do both the driving and the operating by myself, and also because my car is
no longer very reliable. I think I managed this year to drive only 265
miles, probably a new record for me. And a big contrast to some of the
other mobiles.
One of the highlightsthis year was running into fellow mobiler Bill WA3RA
at a truck stop in NUM for an eyeball. I thought my car looks weird with
the big bugcatcher on the back, but Bill's got me beat by a mile!
Over the years there have been a variety of suggestions to change the rules
to require mobiles to keep moving, or to require mobiles to stay put for
minimum of 100 contacts per county, etc. I sure think the rules are just
fine the way they are. Ops are free
to do the NASCAR thing if they so desire (ala WA3RA) or to spend the whole
contest in one county. I think that's the way it should be. The only
complaint I have is that I don't like competing with two-person teams
(although it's fun to beat them). I'd like to see two mobile categories -
one where one person does all of the work and one for two person teams.
But I understand that this is not reasonable unless there are a lot more
mobiles participating. I do think this could happen someday, as more and
more folks seem to be discovering the fun of mobiling.
One more recent subject of discussion (brought up by Tim N8LXR I think) was
low Sunday activity. I have never noticed this, and when I see so many PA
stations handing out numbers over 1,000, I really don't think that this is
a problem. With 12 band-modes active during this event (not even counting
VHF), there should be no boredom for a PA station. I think Tim's
perspective may have been as a station from New Jersey. The solution to
Tim's problem is to come back to PA (preferably as a mobile).
Thanks for all the contacts and thanks to NARC for sponsoring this event.
Like everyone else, I hope the sponsors will start taking electronic logs
again next year. I sent in 46 pages of logs, dupe sheets, summary sheets,
etc. I would like to suggest that if the burdens of administering the PAQP
are too overwheling for NARC, they might put out a call for help on either
this reflector or the contest reflector. I'll bet there are a lot of folks
out there who would be willing to help with one or another aspect of the
huge burden of administering the most popular QSO party.
73,
Hal W1NN op of W3USA/m
