[PaQSO] Band recommendations

Great points Ted and Ed.  

I can't say exactly what my PaQP DX contact ratio is but I do know it is
very, very low.  Working portable every year, my antenna set ups are not
designed for optimum DX take-off angles.  That said, I can recall years in
which I was pleasantly surprised at the number of DX contacts I had on the
upper bands.  A number of "things" could have contributed to that, none of
which were DX friendly antennas.    

My opinion.  This could be similar to the challenge of getting increased
west coast participation in the PaQP.  That is, the majority of the PA ops
stick to the high Q-rate bands and go to the upper bands only occasionally
in order to snag the additional mults.  I have consistently experienced
"lower" rates on the upper bands, and I expect that, but it sure is nice to
see the mult meter increase!  Until there is an additional point incentive
to make upper band contacts, which would include DX, it will remain as is.
Hold on, hold on, I'm not saying the PaQP is broke whatsoever.  I'm simply
saying the current point structure molds the contest to be what it is today.

All of that to say I believe it's that ole upper band thing more than it is
antennas.

Based on Ted's observations, I wonder.......

Are all us guys running high angle radiating wire's on 40 and 80 and we
ain't getting across the pond because of that??? And the mobiles are
running lower angle radiating verticles and they are gettng across the
pond?

    I have operated Pa QSP Party from overseas a few times ---
W3TB/TF,  G0PWW,   W3TB/MM,  4X/G0PWW

    That put me purely into 20m and 15m --- hardly anything to work at
that distance on 40 or 80.
My observation is that there were not many to work.  From England there
were two mobiles one year that I worked in about 6 counties each.  If
you can work those guys, most of the others should be possible.  There
weren't that many.  But there are more each year.
