KD8MQ and the gang,
Greta and I spent a nice 4-day weekend at Black Moshannon
State Park in CEN, which is about 100 miles from INN.
We spent 2 of the days carousing around INN, looking for
a place for my 27' trailer and enough open space to put
up the 30' tower and 3 half wave dipoles. Finally got
lucky when suggested by someone in a restaurant to
visit a particular farmer near Marion Center.
I had found a better location earlier, but the owners
wife wasn't the hospitable type, and he wasn't allowed
to make a decision without consulting her. That was a
couple miles South of Marion Center.
Also, I saw a tower and beam along Rt.119, so I stopped
and visited with WA3BNH, who promised he would get
on long enough to give me a QSO, so I'll not miss my
own county !
SUGGESTION = Anyone looking for someplace to operate
portable, remember, You've got to sell yourself and
amateur radio. I usually mention some recent disaster
that required emergency communications, then tell
them that what I and all the other amateurs are doing is
setting up for a simulated emergency drill, and that the
promoters make it into a contest to make it more fun.
There ain't nobody more experienced at finding someplace,
than yours truly. This is my 14th year operating portable,
from 12 different counties. (Did BRA and FUL twice each).
I set new records in 11 of them, and currently hold the
record in 7.
Doug Maddox once speculated on my operating from
all of the counties ! Well Doug, after this year, only 54
to go. I'll be 132 yrs old when I do the last one. Hope
you're there to cheer me on !
Good luck to all.
