Thanks Gene, right on! I had quite a large station set up in California
however, when I moved to Texas in 2001 (work related) deed restrictions
limited my ability to get HF up running like I would like too so that caused
me to take a harder look at VHF/UHF and alternative modes. Anyway, here in
Houston I noticed most hams are using VHF/UHF and their does not seem to be
much interest or maybe knowledge in Packet or WiresII. I think some may be
intimidated by it for some reason. Now that I am retired, I am trying to
motivate hams around here that I come in contact with to give it a try. We
will see what happens.

Amen, brother! Preach on :-) W5EBS in Odessa and I
stay in contact daily on 40 meter packet-- And I have a
gateway to and from 2-meters here in Amarillo.
Not only will some internet go down in emergencies, but
cellular phones become useless. We had a few grass
fires a few days ago, and law enforcement had the TV
stations asking people to stay off their cellulars-- the
towers were saturated.
"Packet is also error correcting, and at this point, probably
99% secure communications. (Only 1% can copy it.)
You can even print out hard copies." Put that in your ham
presentations!
