Let me add my two cents for what it's worth. First PACKET IS STILL
ALIVE!!!! Although no much activity in Texas I can still use a DX note to
get messages across country to a friend of mine. As for the AIA Pakratt
Model PK-64 I have to agree it out lived its usefulness. Today's technology
would suggest an upgrade. I want to encourage anyone with a TNC to get
active as I am trying to get interest moving in this area. I have used
mostly AMTOR, GTOR, and Packet for years on both HF and VHF frequencies and
enjoyed meeting new friends. Even though the Internet is very much got a
foot hold on communications keep in mind if servers go down, or major power
failures the Internet becomes unreliable. You can always run HF and VHF
gear on batteries. Anyway, along with all this I have also got "WiresII" up
and running and would like to see if we could get a group of Amateurs
together to set up a network. This facilitates voice communication from
your radio to your local computer then out the Internet to another "WiresII"
station repeater. I recently worked Japan over Wires and it worked pretty
well.
Thanks for listening and hope we can keep these modes of operation alive!!!
