Its harder to do machine code with no easy programming interface and no
direct hardware interface. The C-64 with external modem that was just a
zero crossing detector (Baycom) took machine code to work the audio
processing. On the other hand some PDA (and there are several brands and
models with totally incompatible OS and machine codes) have a RS-232
serial port and that can run a standard TNC and there have been a few as
small as the PDA.
