The Data IN pin may not be for audio-encoded packet data, but instead digital logic signals, used to program the radio, or even for a digital audio path from the microphone. Other Icom radios in the past have used a microphone where the audio signal from the microphone is digitized and (along with all the control functions on the microphone) sent to the radio as a digital data stream. In the case of that particular radio (IC2000???) the radio sensed whether the digitizing microphone was connected, when the radio power was turned on. And if without turning off the radio, you disconnected the microphone and plugged in an analog microphone or a packet radio connection, there was a possibility of radio damage, and the PTT function didn't behave as one would expect. So that may be why it's not documented - the practical ability of a user to do anything independently of a programming cable or the Icom-provided microphone may be very limited.
