Bob,
Do you have the TNC baud rate set to match the parameter you are using in
your terminal application?  The TNC 2 clones use a DIP switch at the rear
panel to select baud rate for both the serial port and radio.  On mine 9600
data # 5 is down and 1200 RF #7 is down.  www.packetradio.com  is an
excellent packet radio resource for newbie and old timers alike.  You might
check mfj's webpage to see if a manual is still available for down load, if
not email me off list and I send you mfj-1270C.pdf. That should give you all
the basics you need to know about the 1270 series.
