[Packet] Linux setup - putting TNC into KISS mode

I got a lot of help on this subject before, but have lost most of it.
I have installed the AX25 programs and have an ax0 item in gKrellM. I have
tried sending a "connect" with xcall, and the data is going through to the
TNC ( a MFJ-1270B), but nothing is happening on the status lights. I believe
that I am not putting the TNC into KISS mode first. I have the following in
my /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
#Set up AX.25 Packet
insmod ax25
insmod mkiss
/usr/sbin/kissattach /dev/ttyS0 Port1 44.135.96.242
kissparms -p Port1 -t 100 -s 100 -r 25
/usr/sbin/ax25d
(I thought that the two "insmod" commands should be once-only, but they don't
seem to persist.)
As I understand it, everything there assumes that the TNC is already in KISS
mode and I have to send a KISS command to the TNC first. From memory, it was
"echo" something to the serial port. What is the syntax, and which line does
it follow?
TIA,
Doug VK3KDI.
