I agree with you wholeheartedly, Jerry. Only problem I have with the
enhanced pactor versions is that they aren't open source and one has to pay
the big bux to acquire a proprietary controller. I guess I'll stay on the
trailing edge of technology until a better, open source protocol comes
along.

HF packet has NEVER been great. The data speed (300 baud) is faster than
the path stability and bits get massacred by varying paths. You always
need to set retries to the maximum the TNC will do, the factory default
of 4 is way too few. You need to set maxframe at 1 and keep packlen
short (maybe 40 for HF) and you have a better chance.
Pactor has always worked far better and always will. It was invented
after experience with 300 baud packet proved so rotten. Pactor II does
even better.
