If DCD led comes on with PTT, there is probably a jumper connected
between transmit and receive audio to allow loop back for calibration.
Remove that jumper. It doesn't help reception. Then go to monitor mode
and see if you can copy the node or digipeater. Receive level can be
critical. Once you are copying data from the digipeater, then try to
transmit. Again transmit level is critical. You may need to experiment
with a wide range of levels until you find a level that works. Run the
level on the high side of the median of the range of levels that work.

If the path is long, think more antenna gain, a long yagi works for me.
