[Packet] MFJ 1270C hookup question

Hi all
I have a problem with hooking up an MFJ 1270C and I'm hoping
to get some info/advice.
I've got 2 computers. One is my wife's and it has 2 com ports.
When I hook up my 1270C to it with a simple BD9-DB25 cable, set
up hyperterm, and turn on the TNC, the STA and CON LED's go out
after a few seconds and I get the startup message followed by
the CMD. That is good.
When I hook it up to my computer (different brand) which has
db25 ports, the CON and STA lights stay on and nothing happens
at all. The hyperterm is set up the same in both cases. I have
used all ports on my computer to control rigs so at least that
part works. I have also used internal modems on various ports
on my computer.

My questions are - 
1. What signal controls the condition of the STA and CON lights?
2. Is there some jumper I should use in the cable for my computer
(such as 4 & 5 or 6,8,& 20)?
