I use a Baycom modem.  Tigertronics makes one that is in a DB-25 plug.  I
bought my first one to try packet out figuring that if I liked the mode
I'd get a real TNC later.  10 years later and I've never felt the need to
change.

You could also use AGWPE and WinPack driven of the soundcard on the PC if
your traveling PC is so equipped.
