Hi Jerry,

Can't offer much re used gear but would suggest getting at least a receiver 
asap and copy as much cw as you can every chance you get.  Also, the ARRL 
code xmsns are great to push yourself
Once you get your ticket do as many (cw) QSO's as you can.  You'll be 
surprised how much your speed picks up while you're having fun.
