Hi...
I've been through this with Kenwood for a TM-G707.. the duel band 2 meter / 440 radio.
Since modifications can go askew even for professional technicians, I had Kenwood do it.
Basically all this that I'm about to tell you is available on their web site.
The modification "opens up" about 500 kcs on either side of the ham band on transmit, but on the receive side it opens it up to receive from the bottom of the civil aircraft band, about 119 Mhz to 136 mhz, and all above that to about 950 Mhz except for the Cell phone channels!!!! That includes the 902 - 950 mhz ham band. ARRL is still sorting this band out for usage, so the Portland 902 repeater is shown as "down pending reassignment"...
This includes the area of military aircraft channels from about 200 mhz to 410 Mhz!! And this also includes all of the new 700mhz to 800+ Mhz, national SEIC (do a Google search for Oregon SEIC!) area channels which means the reassigned former 60 - 69 TV channels which became the overflow for the 800 - 950 "First Responder" nation wide trunking channels, now opened up by FCC under Congressional Act in the "Homeland Security Act of 2006", "2005", and "2004" for "Interoperability"... Congress included hams in this allocation, but that hasn't been allocated yet..
In Oregon, the State Legislature had TV hearings on this 700 plus allocation a couple of days ago, and not only did the "First Responders" of Police, Fire, and Public Works ask for it also, as allocated by the State, but so did the Oregon Hospital Association, the Courts for records processing, as asked for by the Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, and the Oregon Department of Human Services, also for records coordination and processing! The State Chairwoman also specified for the Cel phones to be turned off during a disaster "since Cel phones can trigger a remote explosion"! Hahahaha!!!!
I'm waiting for the ham radio "Interoperability Interfacing" portion of 700 Mhz to be acted upon... since this is now the new Federal Law!!! Congress specifically included us in these matters..
Best,
Dick Warren, AAR0OZ / W7TIO
