The National Education Association, after meeting in Tulsa, OKLA.
last month, decided to:
1. Not Place Blame for the September 11 attacks, nor to acknowledge
they were attacks on America.
2. Hold normal class days prior to and following 11 Sep 2002.
3. If subject is broached by a student(s) in the classroom, state that
this
happened because of America's failure to listen to the needs of others.
4. State further that Racial and religious intolerance in America created
such a response in normally peaceful Islamic regimes.
TO WHICH the National Teacher's Association responded:
A. If we ignore the Who, what, when and where of Historical Events, we
tend to have repeat incidents of similar nature.
B. Our Kids are not stupid, and have been seeing these events replayed
repeatedly on TV, in News Specials, and Press Conferences. They have
formed their own opinions and we simply cannot ignore this.
C. State that the exact reasons for why these people did what they did
cannot
ever be fully known, but their stated beliefs are ...."such and such..."
and ask
the children to discuss ways to prevent such things occurring again.
D. Allow Students open discussion as appropriate during class times
leading
up to and following 11 SEP 02.
E. Deal with a student's questions as best you can and as soon as you
can.
F. What we give the NEA for suggesting we ignore the events which
occurred
last Year, the Heroisms, sacrifices and losses we sustained.
To Which I say: NTA OOH-RAH!! and to NEA: RUN, Run VERY Fast, and Hide
WELL should the enemy return, Of course.... What Enemy??!! The Man with
the
Gun over there is simply a tourist seeking directions.... Why don't YOU
go help him?
