[OMIK] Oldest Black Owned Radio Station West of the Mississippi

With our 75th Anniversary occurring next year and our meeting scheduled for
Kansas City I went digging and found that history was made just across the
state line in Missouri....

KPRS AM historically launched in May 1950 as the first African
American-owned radio station west of the Mississippi River in Kansas City,

History and Evolution

   - Founding: Andrew "Skip" Carter founded KPRS.
   - Frequency Move: In 1971, KPRS programming on the AM frequency moved to
   103.3 FM, becoming KPRS-FM (now known as Hot 103 Jamz).
   - Call Sign Change: The original AM frequency transitioned to KPRT (KPRT
   AM), which continues as part of the Carter Broadcast Group.
   - Legacy: It remains the oldest Black-owned, family-operated radio
   broadcast company in the United States. You can read more about their
