Hi Ms. Carolyn
We've been collecting rain water for use in my bride's garden for
years. We have two converted 60-gallon pickle drums we use to collect
the water but there are many commercial options available now at
Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, etc.

Our barrels are connected is "series" so that the first overflows into
the second. Both are outfitted with faucets, and we use a hose to
bring the water over to the garden.

For rain water to be "potable" or drinkable it would have to be
filtered and treated. Unfortunately, rain water that comes off of
asphalt rooves like ours is not potable or drinkable at all.

The folks with drinkable rain water have metal roofs, water tanks, and
a complete filtration and treatment system set up with the specs
mentioned before. I suspect it's easier to dig a well.

When I was in Bermuda, decades ago, I noticed that people collect rain
water but they didn't drink it. Back then drinking water was
purchased, and the people I was staying with used the rain water for
washing clothes, gardens, etc.
