I read the email and Jeff's President Letter - and it hit home for me and
through that and thinking not only about OMIK but about groups that were
formed with a special purpose and a strong history and I wanted to share my
thoughts in much the same way that Jeff has done. Below are my thoughts
about this point in time and I have also attached a PDF file that contains
them too.
Here is what I believe:
OMIK Into The Future
Today when I read Jeff's President Letter it took me back to other
organizations I have been a member of over the years and all of them, at
one time or another, we here at the point it seems OMIK is right now.
That is a proud history of development and activities which were created
out of a serious need. Things that only well-minded people could work
together to address and, if they were true to their goals and feelings,
could create something that made a difference not only for those involved
but also for the welfare of the general public as well.
To me, the OMIK Amateur Radio Association, Inc. - became through that
process and created a group that in turn changed what was into what is. We
need only to revisit our club's history in light of the general conditions
of the times to see that what we are a part of is something more than just
a group of people with some common thoughts and wishes - rather, an
organization that has meaningful goals and purpose. An organization that
stands against the "that's the way it's always been" to create a new Way!
Just in terms of Amateur Radio and the different organizations I have been
a member of or have, for some time, been a participant - ONLY OMIK has been
the premiere organization with goals, purpose, and people to propel them
forward.
Right now we are at a new point in the ongoing history that has been and is
OMIK. I have been a member of this wonderful organization since July of
2010 and served what could be counted as 5 and 1/2 terms as Secretary of
OMIK (totaling 11 consecutive years) during which I was proud and grateful
to be both accepted and to use what I could offer to support and move the
organization forward.
I'm an older guy now like many of us - LOL - but I am not ready to sit back
and let OMIK slowly and quietly fade away. It - we are - you are to
important for that to happen because as OMIK members we stand for something
beyond making contacts and accumulating gear and QSLs.
BUT, in every group and organization, there are moments when the newer and
maybe even younger must step up and say I want my opportunity to help move
us into the future. It doesn't take a person with special skills or
talents or with the biggest number of DX countries worked or the most
pieces of gear in a QRZ image - or any of that. What it takes is simple -
it takes you to say "Now It's My Turn" and like others have done before you
and will after you - step into the light of responsibility and leadership.
To be there for a while to move all of us forward.
Think about this and think about you - and say "Yes I can" and offer your
name, skills, talents, and willingness to work for OMIK to be an officer or
leader!
Thanks for your time.
