Saturday's meeting brought up the topic of OMIK becoming a VEC. I'm not sure if folks were aware, but the FCC took comments in February 2021 about expanding the number of VEC's above the current 14. The public notice can be downloaded from https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-21-9A1.pdf . You can read submitted comments at https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/filings?limit=25&offset=25&proceedings_name=21-2&q=(%22vec%22)&sort=date_disseminated,DESC . If link fails just search for VEC and WT Docket 21-2.
The ARRL's position is that no additional VEC's are needed beyond the current 14. See post at https://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-to-fcc-additional-volunteer-examiner-coordinators-not-needed . Laurel VEC also opposes. See https://ecfsapi.fcc.gov/file/1020352587363/LARC%20VEC%20Response%20to%20WTB%2021-2.pdf
Unless I'm misunderstanding, the current number of VEC's is locked at the existing 14. The only way OMIK could become a VEC is for the FCC to authorize an expansion beyond the 14 or an existing VEC was removed by the FCC. Therefore, OMIK's focus should be on forming VE teams under at least 2 existing VEC's.
Ria Jairam (N2RJ) is listed as an OMIK member. She's the ARRL Hudson division director. I've never met her but watched many of her videos. I'm sure she could clarify if what I stated above is accurate.
Just wanted to share. I'll crawl back in my hole now. :)
