 From the Emergency Management list:

In San Antonio, Texas this year, we've combined our efforts to
improve public awareness of National Preparedness Month with a
Special Event Ham Radio Station, event to be held in a major public
city park. This will be a free event open to the public on Monday,
September 11th. Yes, it is a work day / school day, but there are
folks who don't work or go to school (or are home-schooled) and this
is a very busy public park in downtown San Antonio.

Because Bob Hejl, W2IK, was one of the first ham radio operators to
get on the air following the World Trade Center 9/11 disaster has
relocated to San Antonio, we're using his ham radio call W2IK as the
basis to hold this special event station.

We have brought in the Alamo Regional Citizen Corps (12 county area)
and their affiliated agencies / groups to participate. Then we
invited the San Antonio VOAD Chapter and their member agencies to
participate. Yes, some cross-membership was noticed. :)

The local REACT Radio Team, Hill Country REACT, is doing the
organizing of this event, with support from the AR Citizen Corps and
from the City of San Antonio's Police, Fire and Emergency Management
agencies, plus the American Red Cross chapter's Disaster Services.
We've asked (and expect to get) the City Council of San Antonio for a
proclamation and their support as well.

Last year the AR Citizen Corps organized a public awareness event on
the Saturday of 9/10/2005, but due to the focus being on Hurricanes
Katrina / Rita recovery (we had lots and lots of evacuees in town),
it was not as successful as we would have hoped. This year will be a
different approach, and we hope to not have half of New Orleans
visiting us unless there is an NFL game at the dome.

For those on this list who are also ham radio operators, look for
W2IK on 15 / 20 and 40 meter bands between 9am and 11pm EST on
Monday, September 11, 2006. QSL certificates will be available. More
