I just saw a news flash from CBS.   The US state department has formally setup diplomatic relations with Cook Islands and also with Niue. The USA will open embassies in both places. These islands are becoming sovereign countries. 

It is possible that this will create one or more new DXCC entities. For example the “new” nation of Niue could replace the old place called “Niue”. The old “North Cook Islands” could be replaced by a new “Republic of North Cook Islands” [ or whatever it is going to be called]. 

The rules for DXCC are complex. But if there is a place that was granted “entity status” by the ARRL under a certain criterion but that criterion no longer is relevant then the place can be re-admitted according to the new status. I am staying tuned for some word from the DXCC desk and/or the DX Advisory Committee.  One precedent that comes to mind is “Federal Republic of Germany” that consists of what was colloquially called  “West Germany” and “East Germany”.
