Good Morning OKDXA...
In my previous post I noted that CY0S DT time had been reported off by
as much as 2.5 seconds on their 24.922 MHz signal. We all know how
critical time sync is on FT8. When I began calling them on 12 meters
about an hour ago, it appeared they had fixed their time, they were
right on 0.0 ... Since then their time has changed, it has drifted as
high as +1.3. Then I began trying to adjust to their time with an app I
have called TimeFudge. With TimeFudge you can add or subtract up to a
half second from your computer clock. It doesn't last, because if you
have some type of auto sync on, your computer will adjust back to
correct time within a minute or so...
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is CY0S seems to have a computer
time problem. I don't know what they are using for radios/computers
(couldn't find the info on their website), but on at least two bands
their time is drifting. So, keep that in mind when you are trying to
work them...
Two suggestions for any DXpedition:
1) Don't operate FT8 on 18.095 - W1AW code practice is slightly above
that frequency, W1AW is LOUD and they are not going to move.
2) Use some type of time-sync device on your laptop. The GPS "hockey
puck" USB attached devices work good, they are cheap - about $30 on
Amazon, software is free. They keep good time, don't need to be attached
to the internet...
