[OKDXA] FT8WW - Crozet - QRT

Comparing the actual results from the Bouvet operation with the Crozet operation, by comparing actual number of QSOs with the predicted number of QSOs for each operation, turned out to be quite different than I expected. The horrible weather really reduced the scope of the Bouvet operation in terms of length of the operation in terms of days on the island as well as limiting the ability to bring equipment onto the island.

Thierry really staged a great operation notwithstanding that he was a “one man operation” with significant operating time restrictions.

I needed both Crozet and Bouvet. I still need Bouvet. I didn’t realize that the Bouvet FT8 operation was running the wrong even/odd time slots. I heard them on what I now know to be the wrong slot but I thought it was a pirate so I didn’t call. The “pirate” turned out to be the be the real Bouvet operation. They were definitely workable on FT8 long path on 20m. The time I found out they were on the “wrong” slot was about the same time they corrected the time slot problem. However, I couldn’t copy them again after they fixed the problem. The last time I heard Bouvet they were working NA on 17m CW and I didn’t hear a peep from them using either a short path or long path beam heading.

Maybe there will be an upcoming Bouvet operation using the “rig in a box” as is being developed by some of the NCDXF guys. The RIB concept greatly reduces the number of operators needed and cuts down on the “on island” time to short duration windows to refill generators, etc.

FT8WW - Crozet is now history.

First QSO: 2022-12-24 22:32:00
Last QSO: 2023-03-15 16:59:00
Total QSOs: 51,459
Unique Calls: 17,041

QSOs by Continent:
Asia 13637 26.5%
Europe 25384 49.3%
NA 10369 20.2%

Total CW 11,129
Total FT8 36,361
Total SSB 3,969

   I worked Thierry 4 times, FT8 on 30, 20, and 17 meters and CW on 20
meters. His long path 20 meter signal in the mornings was amazing. As
yet, I have not sent for any QSL cards, paid no money. However, I
checked this morning and my first 3 QSOs are in LoTW. I like that!
Thierry, you put on a good show! 51,459 QSOs from a one man
DXpedition, operating with the conditions and bureaucratic restrictions
imposed by those in charge, is quite an achievement. Well done, and
thanks for the QSOs...
