Kim,
I had this typed up and ready to send just as your note came in. As a pilot, I'm sure that you can relate to some of my comments, and football... YES Football <shaking head>.
The fall is a busy time. In the aviation world there are many fly-ins and picnics every weekend that must be planned around football and other events to maximize attendance. Two such events are happening as I write this (Haskell and Cushing fly-ins), and people from both groups were a little disappointed that the other couldn't pick another weekend. Oh well, it happens. I'm sure this is the same for nearly all group activities. I am at neither event! Instead, I am here building antennas and working on a presentation for your entertainment. hi hi
As a former president of our local EAA chapter I learned that the old saying rings true, you can't please everybody. I hope most of you are able to join us for our annual banquet.
You are doing a fine job, Jeff.
73,
Mark - K5YAC

Subject: Re: [OKDXA] DX Banquet
Speaking also as a recently past president, I'll heartily second this.
Our banquet has traditionally been in October. That leaves 4 (occasionally 5) weekends on which it can be scheduled. We have to schedule it around contests, football games (Really? Football games?), hamfests, location, venue availability, and cost. These have to be set up well in advance and we don't always have the world's appointment calendar at our fingertips when we do it. Not everyone goes to all the hamfests, regardless of schedule. If we dodge a hamfest, that costs us an available weekend. Now we're down to three. There's at least one minor contest in October (CQ WW SSB) in which many enjoy participating.
Now we're down to *two* possible weekends. No doubt somebody has their favorite something on one of those weekends. That means, if you're keeping count, that it is impossible to accommodate everyone's schedule.
Mark Chouinard is being phenomenally generous to host us bunch of crotchety old curmudgeons for our banquet. If it doesn't fit your personal schedule, well... Life's rough and then you miss the DX because of a X10 solar flare.
I'll add here that we are stunningly lucky to have out our current leadership team: they are second to NONE. If any of you feel that you could do better, please step up next Spring at the GC Hamfest and volunteer your expertise. Otherwise, quitcherbitchin, help as you can, and give thanks for the unparalleled leadership team we have.
73 & CU in the Pileups,
Kim N5OP
