April 9 will mark our first Green Country Hamfest meeting in two years.
This meeting marks our biennial officer elections. As you know, we've
changed the election cycle so that not all officers are replaced
wholesale at the same time: this one will elect the club President and
Vice President; next year we'll elect the Secretary/Treasurer. Randy and
I have served as VP and President, respectively, for our allotted two
terms. Each term lasts for two years. We are not up for re-election so
we can't stay another two years. I can't, regardless, as I have some
health issues that must take precedence.
This is all preamble for: someone has to take the reigns. Volunteers are
certainly accepted and encouraged. I was, for all practical purposes, a
volunteer as was Randy. Clubs almost by definition depend on volunteer
services. the job of Pres/VP isn't difficult. You'll need to insure that
we have as full a slate Directors as possible. These serve at the
pleasure of the President and help to vet funding applications and any
changes, modifications, or interpretations of the OKDXA bylaws; they
have no term limits, all have been very helpful and you should keep them
on if they're willing. The OKDXA has five directors; the only one that
isn't currently filled is the NW Director slot because we have no OKDXA
members in the NW domain.
Your duties will primarily be vetting DXpedition funding requests.
You'll likely have a large influence on where meetings occur and their
venue. You might need to pay attention to the website and report if it's
having issues, and maybe interpret what we can do within the limitations
of the bylaws. I've mostly helped determine if DXpedition funding
requests qualify for distributions from our treasury. I've noted issues
with our website, but I've never had to adjudicate by-laws issues. I've
usually sent notices to members who've forgotten to pay their dues. Of
course, you preside over meetings, but you'll also get to meet some
significant people within the DXing world that you might not otherwise
get to meet. As an aside: if you know some significant DXers, ham radio
gurus of any stripe, or have access to interesting programs please come
forward, regardless of whether your an officer.
Randy, Jeff, and myself will help get you get oriented into the
position. But the club belongs to the membership and officers can come
only from within the membership. Officers aren't appointed: this isn't a
monarchy. So, at the GC hamfest, please step forward and help lead the
OKDXA into the future!
