A quick note: Steve Gecewics, K0CS, became a Silent Key on 9 Feb due to
long-term complications of COVID-19.
He was an active DXer and had been on the Honor Roll. You probably have
never heard of him, but he was one of the three involved in designing,
producing, and marketing a revolutionary keyer: the KC1 Kansas City
Keyer, introduced around 1986. It was made by a company called "Lance
Johnson Engineering," in Elizabeth, CO. Steve told me the name "Lance
Johnson" was a fabrication as there was no "Lance Johnson" involved. I
have three of these keyers that I maintain after Steve sent me some
parts. This keyer revolutionized contesting with it's memory
partitioning and commands. It also had an optional non-volatile memory.
I got mine around 1988 and first used it in the ARRL Sweep Stakes. It
increased my enjoyment immensely!
I was looking forward to contacting Steve as I had very recently
stumbled upon a solution to the unreliability of the non-volatile memory
-- I replaced the speed control potentiometer (the old one was worn out)
and the switch in the new one had no contact bounce like the old one
did. He had suspected contact bounce was the culprit, and he was right.
