Thanks, John!
Serendipity is my friend: it was late and 80 m was long; I couldn't hear most of the pileup. I was done with unproductive working at home, and so quickly checked spots and saw VP6R on 80. I've gotten them on 160 (I was amazed I got them at all) and thought I had them on 80, but didn't. They weren't busy at all and seemed to be going at pretty leisurely pace. So, I tuned up the amp, plugged in the last split I saw, and dropped my call once. After a brief pause, they called me! I was pretty surprised and quite happy.
I use an off-center fed vertical dipole for 80 m DX (a Force 12 Sigma 80, no longer made). I've found that it's not very good for stateside stuff; for that I use an inverted Vee (40 ft apex).

Congrats Kim! I still need VP6 on 80 meters, but last night their FT8
frequency was covered up by some noise I have here. That was the first
time I aw them being spotted on 80m FT8 at a decent hour. I did get them
on 160m FT8 last night for a new band country. Given my lousy antenna for
the low bands, that was truly amazing!
