This year I decided to try operating the OKQP as a mobile for the first
time. Sorry to say, my results were terrible. I had a total of only 160
QSO's in the log. On Saturday I followed my route through the northeastern
Oklahoma counties of Wagoner, Mayes, Rogers, Nowata, Craig, Ottawa,
Delaware, Adair, Cherokee, and Wagoner, stopping on county lines. I stayed
at each stop until stations quit calling or I had called CQ for 15 to 20
minutes with no response. I operated 20 and 40 meters CW from each stop. The
only Oklahoma stations I worked were KE5XX in CIM/TEX and N4CD in CIM. Even
W5CW couldn't hear me on 40 meters when I was one county away on the ADA/CHE
line. Zero QSO's were had in Nowata and Craig counties. Due to the poor
results on Saturday, I did not go out on Sunday.
I don't think my modified Hustler antenna performed very well. I could
only get about 30 watts out of my K3 radio. I kept getting a "low batt
voltage" message on the display. I suspect the power cable was too long.
Anyway, I need to do some work on the equipment before trying mobile again.
Thanks and congrats to those stations who managed to work my
peanut-whistle.
73,
Jeff - K5WE
