I've found that not hearing who they work is the most frustrating part. I alway try to spot who they're working and figure out their pattern, if they have one. Is the next guy 300 Hz up? 400 Hz down? There often is a pattern.
This is where a good band scope/sweep display come in handy and something I don't have on my Orion II. It has a band scope, but the display has insufficient resolution. I can get a better outboard display, but it's ex$pen$ive and, if I want to avoid odd looking spectra, requires I fabricate a buffer amp to yield a flat response.
