It depends on what you have at home. Short whips are very inefficient so if you're already a little pistol this won't increase the caliber or muzzle velocity :)

I've been on travel this entire time and so haven't had any chance, but everything I've heard is that conditions are very poor. Can't work 'em if you can't hear 'em. 

Like you, I like snagging the DX with my own station. But, sometimes I simply don't make it. In this case, big antennas up high may be the only hope.
