It certainly exceeds the costs associated with tornadoes, and probably 
everything else. It varies by year, but over a long term, winter weather is by 
far the most expensive. The nature of the cost is different than severe 
convective weather, though. The cost comes from lost productivity, road 
maintenance requirements such as sanding, salting and plowing, road damage that 
has to be repaired later, power failure costs, utility costs to repair damaged 
infrastructure, airline costs for delays and cancellations, etc. The list is 
long if you include all of the weather-related costs. Of course, severe 
convective weather generates the same sorts of costs to airlines and utilities, 
and generates different losses, such as flooding but it's more localized in both 
time and space. Winter weather does its dastardly deed by doing over such a 
large area.

In terms of 
fatalities, http://www-das.uwyo.edu/~geerts/cwx/notes/chap03/nat_hazard.html has 
some interesting statistics. Heat waves are the biggest killer in the US, 
followed by winter weather and cold. After that we have floods and next comes 
lightning. Tornadoes rate 6th, behind other wind-related deaths. I've seen later 
studies that show similar statistics.

Well done indeed Kim. But I  have a question. You stated that winter 
weather events are the most costly  weather event. Does that mean that the total 

monetary total of  winter weather events exceeds that of the summer tornadic 
events  ??
