[OKDXA] South Orkneys

These are particularly unusual circumstances! Polar (not merely
arctic) air is set in place with a fresh snow pack, light or calm
winds and clear skies. This maximizes IR radiation (ice is a superb
radiator at these far IR wavelengths) and we get extremely shallow,
extremely cold layers at ground level.

I have two thermometers at my QTH: one at about 10 m up my tower, and
one at about 1.5 m out by my wife's garden. At 10 m, the lowest
temperature was 0F. At 1.5 m, it was -4F. That's a magnificent
inversion with a stunning lapse rate (change of temperature with
height) of +144 deg F per 1000 ft! Obviously, the layer wasn't 1000
ft deep, but that's a very strong inversion, all driven by radiation!
