I still have my '930S, though I haven't used it much. I did all the
mods for the power supply and have the International Radio (Inrad)
filters in it along with the PIEXX board, which allows computer
control of all but mode. It runs 28 VDC as Vcc in the final PA, and
so has exceptional tx IMD performance (even by current standards). It
has a linear PS and so is pretty heavy.
The '930S has a fair bit of phase noise in the synthesizer judged by
our current standards and if there's one transmitting close by you'll
certainly hear it. Probably because the low bands are noisy anyway,
the phase noise isn't as apparent. Because of the phase noise, the rx
folds rather easily with strong signals that are within 10-20 kHz,
such as in a FD or multi-multi environment. It's not as bad as the
Yeasu FT-747GX (terrible phase noise!), though and still quieter than
the TS-940S. Mine is aligned to within an inch of its life,
absolutely centered in the filters and I've been complemented on its
performance.
It has a triple conversion rx with a VHF 1st IF (44 MHz) and, until
recently, we were stuck with the original ceramic roofing filter
which is (I think) 40 kHz wide with rather shallow skirts. Within the
past few years, Inrad has developed a much better roofing filter for
it that is only 4 kHz wide. With it installed strong signals further
than 2 kHz away simply vanish. Aside from having negative
consequences if you like AM, it's a well-spent $175 and revitalizes
an already good radio.
That said, the '930 is getting very long in the tooth. If anything
significant fails on this one, I'll probably not try to fix it unless
I can get a cheap parts rig.
