That reminds me of working HC8N on 6 meters.  Two or 3 years in a row they would be in here on F2, and I would struggle to work them at the noise level, and then 30 minutes later they would be 20 over 9.  ALso happened for WD5USA a couple of times.  We still joke about it when we speak to each other on the local repeater.
