At one point, my Dad (W5JHJ, SK) told me that old time CW ops would 
send the American Morse version of "OK" because it was faster. It's 
dit-dit dahdidah, where the - is an intra-character space (not to be 
confused with an inter-character space). Also, old time ops would 
send didit-dit (American Morse "C") for "Is the frequency in use?" It 
used to be "Is the line is use?" A response indicating "in use" was a 
single dit.   I always do this before I before I fire up on a 
frequency. Failing a response, I'll use the more intrusive (and 
technically incorrect) "QRL?" Sometimes I get a "yes," but I'm always 
pleased when someone responds with an International Morse "C."

Over my, um... 38 years (!) of being a ham, I've heard a single dit 
response to didit-dit on exactly one occasion. It was a long time ago 
and I couldn't believe it, so I sent didit-dit again, and again got 
back a single dit. Whoever it was really meant it!
