Pedantry notwithstanding, it's not even really "Morse" code, which was developed by Vail (Morse had the purse strings and so got the billing). 

It's the Morse International Code or Continental Code, not to be confused with American Morse, which has something like 11 different letters and all but one different numerals. Apparently, various codes were quite the cottage industry early on. Around the time when international radio communication became possible, a general agreement was struck to use the International version.
