Well... This might be a good time to upgrade your reading habits.

Did a bit of surfing and found elevated radials are recommended by Force 
12 and Butternut, and was surprised to see that 2-4 radials per band (in 
the case of a trap vertical) were deemed adequate. This was confirmed here:

...where a commercial AM BCB grounding contractor sez 6-10 elevated 
radials work as well as the BCB standard of 120 1/4 wave buried radials. 
(?) Check out the pics to see how the Big Boys (not Bug Boys) do 
business. Also... DAD = Directional Antenna Day, DAN = Directional 
Antenna Night. Note that in all the pictured projects they're installing 
buried radials. That has been the standard issue setup for AM stations 
since Marconi was in diapers.
