Debian (parent of Ubuntu, however unwilling) has this :-)

Runs from Windows and adds the installer to your boot menu. Boot the
installer and away you go. Not for those still on dial-up! Ubuntu, I
think, plans a similar site.

I migrated from cast-off SPARCs at home (ex-Sun employee) and enjoyed
the GNU stuff they started to include with Solaris 8. Solaris 10 is
even more GNUey, and GNOME is now the default desktop, but they
changed so many things under the hood that Solaris 2 guy like me was
almost starting over ...

classes), but got disgruntled with their on again/off again support of
regular folks.
Switched to SuSE right after Novell bought them as a show of support,
even paid for the "home edition" or whatever it was called (downloaded
the rest of it from a nearby mirror).
Went to Kubuntu (don't care for GNOME) last year when Novell started
their shenanigans with the Beast. So far, I think it's the best. Way
easy to update, way easy to add new packages (via adept).
My only reason for not using it as the primary OS on the Radio
Computer at N5UWY is that the radio stuff isn't as good as what's
available for XP. But, that will come, I'm convinced. Don't
misunderstand me though - there is a ton of stuff. See
http://radio.linux.org.au/.
If we could just get some of those folks writing quality code in the
N1MM Logger, MMTTY, and DXLab Suite projects to move towards GNU/Linux
... :-)
As for codecs, etc, google around for VLC (Video LAN Client). Solves
all audio/video issues. 'Cept maybe legal. :-)
