Of course it's portible... It has a handile on the top!

In case anyone is interested, here's the schematic for a typical TO of
that vintage: http://bama.edebris.com/download/zenith/h500/H500.pdf

Can't recall if it's the 1L4 tube or another that is almost impossible
to find but there are aficionados who have been known to buy old battery
sets of lesser pedigree just for that tube. I had a 500 series
TransOceanic and sold it (too) cheap at a swap years ago 'cuz I didn't
know it was becoming a cult radio and it didn't exactly set my ears on
fire with the audio performance. RF performance was also less than
contest quality. Takes up a fair amount of desk space for what it does, too.

In case anyone cares, the Salvation Army store @ south 71st a tad east
of Garnett in Tulsa has a mid-50's vintage Grundig-Majestic lo-boy
consolette sitting on the floor. The Majestic thing means it's a US
Export model. Domestic goods were just labeled 'Grundig' and required a
schaltenplan for service work. Ebony cabinet, AM/FM/SW radio, open the
lid and you'll see a semi-nasty old turntable with a rotted out rubber
mat and storage space for your favorite Polka records. Should restore
into a real looker - but - the chassis is not one of Grundig's better
efforts. Single ended audio output and not much glass in the RF section,
but it does have a 'WunderBar' tuning tube. I always liked those. Think
of it as a non-DX machine. Also includes a bag of tubes (14-ish) that
came out of a 19" portible color TV set that used compactrons and a
series filament string. I may not know much, but I know TV tubes when I
see 'em.

Asking price for the rig is $49.95 and that should reduce by 25% in a
week or so. Another week and it goes halfies, assuming someone doesn't
scoop it up before then. They also have a Tek 465B portible o-scope for
$199.95. Same deal, another week and it drops 25% then 50% a week later.
See store manager for details. The scope is complete with the operators
manual and a probe but may have spent plenty of time in a service van.
The case shows some dings and wear but the front panel cover is included
and the face plate is nicely preserved. No busted knobs or bent switch
handiles. That's a 100 MHz item and could be a real bench buddy once the
price comes down into reality. Dual channel, dual timebase, schematics
are available for download at BAMA just in case ya' need 'em.

BTW: Finally got around to hooking up the ol' TS-690 on a cheezy receive
only antenna just to get handy with how the bands are doin' and was
amused to listen to an OM working a contest Friday night. Asked the
other station to repeat his call four times before he got it then gave a
5/9 signal report.

Guess some things never change... ;)
