John,  

I have had a TS 930s in my shack since 1984. Many other radios have come and
gone since, but it remains.  Most of the ones I see listed for sale are in
the price range you mention. I don't think you can find a better HF radio
for DXing or Contests in the $500 price range.

I just purchased a Yaesu FT857D to use on VHF/UHF and
satellites, and now need a HF rig to go with it. 
Based on list members experiences, what is a good HF
DXing and contest rig that can be had for around $500
used?
