I have for sale an Icom 756 HF/6m radio which I will
bring to Ham Holiday if anyone is interested in buyin
it. If you can't make Ham Holiday on Saturday, I can
even bring it by your house while I am in OK City for
Ham Holiday. The 756 does dual receive, and has the
band scope which is very useful for finding activity.
This is not the PRO, it is the 756 original model, but
there are no lines in the screen, and it works just
fine with one exception:

The receive seems a bit low on it. It
receives ok, and I worked 300 stations with it in the
IARU contest this past weekend, but it seems that
you
have to turn the preamp on a little more than you do
on most 756s. The preamps do seem to work as they
bring up the signal level and the background noise. I
seem to need Preamp 1 or preamp 2 on for 30m, and
preamp 1 on for 40 meters, when I usually run radios
with no preamps on those bands. It seems a little
more noticable on 6m. I worked on local station on
6m, and he was S9 on the 756 and about S9+20 on an
Icom 706mKIIG. Now I realize that it could be
differences in S meters, but he did sound
a bit louder on the 706 as well. I also observed
similar results on HF when comparing the 2 rigs, just
not as dramatic on the S meter.

I have emails from both Scott Malcom at MTS and Mike
N1EQ who believe the problem is just an RX muting
diode or 2, and they estimate it would be $75 or so to
fix and ship. I can forward you copies of these
emails if you like. I will point out again that the
756 is very usable on HF, and I have made some 6m QSOs
with it, but it doesn't seem quite as sensitive there
as it should be. I could hang on to it and use it on
HF myself (and might wish I did) but I find myself
becoming too obsessive about gear any more and want
everything working perfectly.

The Icom 756 comes with the power cord, hand mic, and
a copy of the manual and service manual on CD. The
case is in very good condition, and the main reason I
am selling it was that I picked up another rig to use
while I sent the 756 in, and like this other rig
enough that I would like to keep it and get a couple
of accessories for it.

Anyways, I am asking $620 for the 756, and as stated
before, it will work fine for you on HF and 6m for
most things without doing anything to it, or you can
send it in for repair yourself.

Any interest out there? I will bring it to Ham
Holiday Saturday if so. I can be reached by phone at
580-591-6885 if you wish to speak to me more about it.

73s John AA5JG
