I think Froggy's explanation is plausible.  Mine is just frustration with
ragchewers coming ever lower into the DX band.  I imagine we will see more
of this as the bands are opened up to the freebee's!  It makes it hard to
split that far because most 160 meter antennas do not have much bandwidth
below 2:1.  I hate using the tuner because you are just fooling your radio
into thinking you have a resonant antenna.  I have a very difficult time
working Europe from here mainly because of the east coast wall.  I cannot
work them because the east coast guys are having their 500th contact with
whatever country.  I have just a few European countries, Israel, and a
couple of African countries to the east.  Most of my contacts are with the
Caribbean and South American.  Towards the Pacific I only have Alaska,
Hawaii, and Kure on 160.  Good Hunting!

Thanks for the explanations.  Both very logical.  Not that it matters much
here since a Q with EU is a BIG day.

If a guy were serious about nabbing some of the deep Asians on 160, he might
need to have a switch to get resonant above 1900.

Ken.....There hving probs in that part of the world with  Chineese radar 
which is believed to be on Hainan island. The large split allows  them to
listen 
around the QRM.
