We've left the Antarctic Peninsula 24 hours ago and are heading NNE toward
S. Georgia. Since leaving the peninsula we did stop at Elephant I. and S.
Orkney (only two contacts here, Cape Town and Italy). I can't tell you
enough about the monstrous size and the quantity of Giant Tabular icebergs.
They are everywhere in our path. I've taken more that 1700 photos so fare
with the record one day total of 401 and Marion has at least 700-800 more.
Of course many will be edited out before we bore you with the shear volume.
The trip is going very smoothly in spite of being in the historically rough
southern ocean. I haven't missed a meal. Passengers have expressed almost
as much interest in our Ham Radio activities as those of you hoping to hear
us. (Bill, I made CW contact with Yarda on 40M late last night). It's not
a big number but we've had almost 100 contacts in about 25 countries, mostly
CW but a few SSB. The 20,30,40 meter bands open for us late in the day
about 1700Z until we have to turn out the lights out near 0200Z which is
midnight for us now that we have crossed eastward into another time zone.
We are scheduled to arrive S. Georgia tomorrow AM about 1000Z and spend the
next 4-5 days exploring here. So, again we will do our best to give you the
contact here and we will mail the envelopes to the Belgian Antarctic Society
too.
German ops DJ6SI, Baldur Drobnica, and DJ9ZB, Franz Langner, are
expected today to be in Burundi. Baldur will do the CW work as 9U0X
while Franz will be QRV on SSB as 9U9Z. Plans are to be on 10 through
160 meters until March 1st. QSL 9U0X via DJ6SI and 9U9Z via DJ9ZB.
